A word about our listings. In the first two lists on this page, international
schools are categorized and characterized as "international"
in the broadest manner possible. In the other lists, international schools
are sorted into various categories that are likely to suit the unique and
particular interests and needs of various types of families in Japan.
As people access our website from all parts of Japan and from outside of Japan, a broader listing is more helpful for those whose available schooling options may be narrower. This is especially so when one resides in places other than the more metropolitan areas of Tokyo / Yokohama and Osaka / Kyoto, where the foreign community is sparser.
The needs of our community are also diverse -- as such, you will find that our listings include schools that may function like English-language immersion or support after-schools for international families or returnees with children who attend Japanese public or private day schools. Our listings also include non-English international schools because our community here is truly international and will need the diversity of options.
Finally, as developing the bilingual or trilingual child is often an important goal for the majority of parents or educators who access this website, we attempt to provide the most updated listing of international institutions that provide bilingual or multilingual education.
CAVEAT: Though we have tried our best to include as much salient information about
the various school offerings, this website is no substitute for your own
homework on the background of the school. We recommend that you carry out
a personal visit to the school(s) for an accurate assessment of the school
and pursue other sources, books, newspapers and journals, and not forgetting
hearsay, preferably that of experienced parents of school graduates.
