INTERNATIONAL SCHOOLS (PRIMARY / ELEMENTARY - HIGH SCHOOL)
Back to "Directory Listings of International Schools"
*Please note that closed schools or non-functioning links are in italics.
** Please also note that many schools which are de facto functioning international
schools are either called "free schools" or have NPO status.
The foremost reason for this anomaly compared to other countries is that
the Japanese government does not grant recognition of the majority of international
schools, especially ethnic schools. Instead it will classify such schools
as "free schools" or commercial schools or Non-Profit Organisations
(NPO). Ethnic schools that support predominantly students belonging to
one ethnic group are listed here under this International Schools listing. There is no separate listing - because if you were a non-Japanese
foreigner browsing this website from overseas, you would be a regarded
member of the international community regardless of your ethnic group or race, hence no distinction
is made here. That distinction should be self-obvious from either the name
of the school OR the information provided along with the listing.

The AIS elementary program follows a hybrid Japanese-North American curriculum,
and is currently seeking accreditation from Japan’s Ministry of Education,
Culture, Sports, Science and Technology. Subjects include English language,
Japanese language, Math, Science, Social Studies, Music, Physical Education,
Life Skill, and Moral Education. All subjects, with the exception of Japanese
language and Social Studies, are taught in English. Focused on gaining
accreditation from the MEXT, AIS uses government-approved textbooks that
have been translated into English. In addition, these texts are supplemented
with textbooks form overseas. The AIS curriculum is challenging. In addition
to the two language classes (English & Japanese) the 9-year curriculum
has been condensed to 7 years, to allow Junior High students to put their
energy into focused subjects, cross-subject studies and SAT preparation.
The AIS kindergarten program draws on Montessori techniques to help foster
independence and self –confidence and primary focuses on immersing the
children in English and surrounding them with a large variety of stimulating
activities filled with music, movement, stories, show-and-tell, art, math,
observation, experimentation, and some introduction to reading and writing).
Although the school was designed for Japanese students it has roughly 30%
of its student body from overseas.

'Currently, 134 children, are studying at the school currently K-8) where
every lesson is given in English. "Our school's selling point is not English but
that we have adopted the Central Board of Secondary Education (CBSE) currciulum,
a tough and modern curriculum that is indisnesable in acaquiring the scholastic
abilit y required to pass the competitive entrance examinations in my country,"
(Niyanta) Deshpande (Director of GISS) said. //He said that as this was the
major curriculum in India, children who studied under this curriculum overseas
could easily adapt to local schools when they returned to India. "Not only
Indian children, children from other countries can get the benefit from this
curriculum to pass the examinations of international univerrsities," he said.
//"As it is quite difficult to enter a prestigious university in India, Indian
parents want their children to have high academic ability and competitiveness,"
Deshpande said. "In our school, students will learn three languages-English,
Hindi or French, and Japanese. Lessons are conducted in Englsh, but we need to
learn Hindi to live in India."//Compared with other international schools, the
tuition is quite resonably priced-¥600,000-800,000 a year. The curriculum is the
same inevery school-they have adopted the Montessori kindergarten approach for
very young children while using the CBSE curriculum and International
Baccalaureate system, which is recognized at many universities around the world,

The school is located in traditionally-styled imperial grounds with parks
that will allow the children to be surrounded not only by a truly Japanese
atmosphere but also by abundant, healthy, greenery so scarce in an urban
setting. The school is also has use of the spacious halls of the local
Shogenji Temple for their movement classes, sensory integration therapy,
and other activities. The school emphasizes its classroom setups and tools
since these are especially important in a Waldorf schools with the hallmark
Steiner belief is that children need a constant connection with natural
materials and thrive best in a gentle atmosphere with subdue tones and
lighting. Waldorf teachers use specially designed multi-purpose objects
that encourage divergent thinking. Storybooks are selected for their inherent
moral and cultural lessons. A lyre and simple flutes are standard musical
equipment along with the more traditional supplies needed for arts, handiwork
and movement. Waldorf education is about teaching all subjects creatively
and artistically. The many new and often challenging ideas put before students
are presented in an imaginative, rhythmic, and always cheerful way. This
will emotionally engage the student and facilitate learning. Art and music
are interwoven throughout the curriculum in a Waldorf school in order to
develop the imagination, creativity and joy in learning. After reading,
the children might draw pictures of the story with bright beeswax crayons,
metamorphosing newly learned letters into colorful beings. They might try
experimenting with self-made music inspired by the tales, which may then
become the class play that semester. The school curriculum can be viewed
at here

The school invites you to visit and experience first-hand the quality education that centers on student learning and student achievement. For the history and story on ISS, see Japan Times article. (ISS formerly called INTERNATIONAL SCHOOL SUPPORT SERVICES)
Parent's testimonial: My oldest son went to ISS last year and that was
his first time to go to school as we had homeschooled prior to that. This
year my younger son also attended - again his first school experience.
ISS is a very small school of about 50 students in Mita with students from
grade 6 through 12. They have about 6 teachers and sometimes bring in teachers
for specific needs for specific students. It is like other international
schools, very expensive so is not an option for everyone. I have liked
the school becuase they have been very flexible about meeting my sons'
needs. I haven't chosen to get formal credit for the classes the boys have
taken but they offer credits through distance learning programs in the
U.S. They are moving to a program in conjunction with Laurel Springs. I like that ISS offers quite a few special interest project type coures including theater, IT, sports, producing magazines, animation, band, gardening, woodwork. What they offer depends a bit on what the students are interested in. Any programs they offer after school are open to the public and as they are very flexible I think they would allow students to attend specific classes if that was what you wanted. The principal is very approachable. My oldest son has loved attending ISS and thinks I made a great decision to send him there and my youngest son has enjoyed it too. I would certainly recommend ISS if you want a more individual approach to learning as the class size is usually around 5 students. They offer study periods where students can get additional help if needed. The student mix is very diverse. It is also very supportive of students who learn differently. -- Jill

Phone: 81-565-46-5300 Fax: 81-565-46-5303 Email
The school began with special junior high classes in 1981 designed for children of Japanese employees to company branches dispatched on overseas assignments during the 1970s and 1980s (an educational problem often arose when the families returned to Japan for the children whose overseas experiences had exposed the children to new languages and to an international outlook making them different from their peers in Japan, and whose absence in Japan had caused them to fall behind their peers in Japanese literature and language) A year later Nanzan Senior High School followed suit. Each year the number of these students increased, and eventually special facilities had to be built. In 1993 independent facilities were put up in Toyota City, and Nanzan Kokusai High School was born with the first students arriving in April of that year. Since families return to Japan from work abroad at various times during the year, the school's policy is to admit students as quickly as possible rather than to wait until the beginning of the semester. The classes are kept rather small to accommodate the various backgrounds of the students and to respond to their individual needs. The medium of education in the classrooms is Japanese, but in the Foreign Language classes, i.e., English, French, and Spanish, students are placed according to their language ability levels. Junior high and high school curriculum.

The school offers a developmentally based multiage school environment free
from the pressures and rigidity of the fixed age-grade system prevalent
at most of the schools in Japan. Every child becomes bilingual or trilingual
(Chinese currently being offered). At New International School, the children
learn bilingually in both English and Japanese through team-taught multiage
classes; a resource and thematic-based curriculum; and a combination of
whole group, individual, center-based and project-based activities. There
are two full time homeroom teachers for fewer than 20 children in each
exceptionally well-resourced classroom. Parents are assured of their child’s
progress in both languages along developmentally based continuums, through
parent seminars, student presentations, student-led conferences, anecdotal
reports and portfolios. The school philosophy emphasizes non-discrimination
on the basis of race, sex or country of origin. The school was accredited
by Middle States at the end of our fourth year and has just received a
Gakko Hojin in August from the Tokyo Metropolitan Government, after our
5th year.

A small school that is committed to the importance of small class size
along with one-on-one tutoring support. After working in the international
education field in Tokyo for more than 5 years, the founders felt there
was a need for an alternative school for children who did not enjoy a larger
classroom environment or who did not succeed in the mainstream international
schools available to them. The small size of the school enables us to give
everyone a lot of individual attention and provide comprehensive support
and guidance at all times. The school offers distance learning programs
for grades 7-12 (Ages 12-18). Students may enroll at any time during the
year, and if need be, set an individual pace for their work. Exceptional
students are encouraged to take more challenging courses to better prepare
them for post-secondary education. Courses are also available for part-time
students and those who have taken a break from education. Older students
can take classes outside normal school hours if they have other commitments.
Graduation from OIS is not based on age or grade, but rather on credits
earned. All students are provided with academic support when choosing courses,
with a view to ensuring the student is well-equipped for post-graduation
life. In the later years, emphasis is put on SAT preparation, with classes
available for math, English and other SAT subjects. Graduating students
are given extensive help with university applications to institutions in
Japan, America, England, and throughout the world. Students are enrolled
on distance learning programs at North Dakota Independent Study or at The
University of Nebraska-Lincoln Independent Study High School. These programs
are fully accredited through the North Central Association Commission and
School Improvement (NCACASI).

The Tokyo Korean Elementary School has established an integrated (or Immersion) English Program for grades one and two, a Modified Immersion Program for grades three and four, and an Extensive English Study Program for grades five and six. The primary aim of the English program is to provide students with skills needed to communicate in English, and thereby enhance their ability to perform effectively and meet with success in a rapidly changing global environment. It aims as well to provide students with an understanding of the cultures of English-speaking societies by integrating cultural study into daily instruction. To provide the best environment possible to learn a foreign language, all classes are kept small and students are exposed to a variety of English texts, expected to write for a multitude of purposes, and required to listen to and speak English for extended periods of time.
"The Korean School in Tokyo now has a dual language program in Korean and English. A parent from there recently told me there are about 40 students per class, but with two homeroom teachers. I do not know if the school is open to non-Koreans. I believe they have two classes per grade and they are quite full at least in the early elementary grades.. Four or five years ago, parents were flocking from there to international schools because they wanted English so badly, which I think was one of the factors that prompted the school to make such a dual language program." - Steve in Saitama
